Weekly Update for October 2, 2023

A test emergency alert will be sent to all personal mobile phones nationwide on Wednesday, Oct. 4, around 1:20 p.m. CST from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

BOTR Update

• The emergency door to the playground has should be completed by October 4, 2023

• On Friday, after school, Jean Jammer, Julie Zabell, Jared Brennan and I will be looking at electrical and network outlet placement in the new classrooms.

I was informed on Wednesday that Christian Family Services was able to find a qualified candidate for the School-Based Wellness Specialist (school counselor) position. Rachel Kroehnke is currently a member at the CORE in Appleton and will be joining us soon. More information will come on specific responsibilities she will have at our school, but we know it will be one day per week.

After discussion with our Treasurer & Business Manager the following changes will be taking place for Hourly employees:

1. Hourly employees will be paid 2 times a month on the 5th and 20th. Pay periods will be the 1st to the 15th and 16th to the last day of the month. October 20th will be a catchup for any September days not included in the last paycheck.
2. Any employee may now use direct deposit. Lisa will have forms available, and I will send an electronic form to all staff in a separate email later today or next week.

SOAR

Some of our big kids struggled to lead well during PBIS on Wednesday. I am brainstorming how to help them rise to the expectations we have for them as they lead. This coming Wednesday is an opportunity for you to work on your classroom community. Let me know if you need ideas for activities or learning targets. Please feel free to share your thoughts with me via email if you have thoughts or ideas related to helping our kids SOAR during whole-school activities. Thanks!

All Staff

Church Council met this past week and discussed these items:

• Long-term solutions for the kitchen stove (Scott Kohls was going to contact someone to lead an investigation into use)

• A facilities use request for the Activity Center for Blacksheep Volleyball - Joe Woldt will work with them and Zandalee to nail down and communicate details

• A school marketing task force was approved - Brian Zwieg will be looking into this more and looking for volunteers to help facilitate this work

BOTR Update

• Excavation uncovered some surprises at the current dumpster enclosure. Progress will be halted indefinitely while solutions are discussed.

• The emergency door to the playground has should be completed by September 27, 2023

Please use disposable towels to clean messes in the kitchen and dining areas. We do not have anyone taking the regular towels home (I did in the summer, but I no longer have the time) to clean them. I am still looking for viable solutions for table-cleaning towels. Jill Schultz did this last year, but obviously can no longer do this.

One of our lunch volunteers, Sharon Treml, has asked to do lunch no longer. This leaves us with one 3-day volunteer and whoever we can staff it with in-house. We thank Denise for her continued service.

I may need to step out of the building briefly on Tuesday from 10-12. That is still up in the air, so I did not include it below.

SOAR

*PBIS will be back in the gym in BASIC groups on Wednesday, 9/27. See slides 18 and 19 of the Whole School PBIS Plan.

*Don’t forget to prepare for our Book Study:

• Read & be ready to discuss the Foreword & Welcome from Habits of Highly Effective Teachers

• Reflect on “The concept of class behavior management incorporates everything teachers do in the classroom - from behavior expectations to how double-digits math is taught. All teacher classroom methods impact how students behave and, consequently, the way they learn.” on p.16, Do you view everything you do in the classroom as managing behavior?

• Reread the second paragraph in the Welcome on p. 19: Do you see your definition of behavior management described at the beginning or the end of the paragraph or a blend of the two?

• Looking at the graphic on p.22: What do you think we do well, and where do we have room to improve?

• What did you notice, or what would you like to discuss from the Foreword and Welcome?

Plans for the playground fencing and entry continue to evolve based on cost updates. Final decisions have yet to be made for entry into the playground. I have communicated the staff and parents' preferences regarding safety and convenience, but at this time, fencing and playground elements are still in flux. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jim Gamble directly. Going forward, I will communicate what information I can when I can when I get it regarding the Built on the Rock project. Please contact Jim directly with any questions about timelines or construction issues. Jim’s email is stewardship@stpaulgreenbay.com.

Jared has been in communication with CESA 6 about our technology infrastructure update and can provide the following update:

• On 9/26 a group from CESA 6 will come in and rack some pieces of the new network. They will be working starting at 2 PM but setting up network closets

• They will return on 10/26 and possibly 10/27 to change the network over to the new equipment 

Please continue to report technology and facilities issues. We can’t fix them if we do not know about them. We ask you to use the Help Ticketing system in the SPGB tab to report all issues going forward. If you need assistance using this, please let Jared or me know, and we would be happy to help.

SOAR

Gretchen will lead PBIS on Wednesday afternoon because I will be doing observations at FVL with my Spanish PLC. You will find the Logistics and Plan on slides 18 and 19 of the Whole School PBIS Plan by Monday morning.

This is a reminder that during professional development, we will discuss the Foreword and the Welcome sections of our book study book on September 26th.
